If you could only have one show with you on a deserted island for the rest of your life, what would it be? Any band, any genre. Doesn't even have to be on Archive.

Mine: GD, 9/3/77, Englishtown, NJ---first Dead show I ever got, and the one that converted me. It was, and still is, a life-changer.

I'd have to say Bob Marley and the Wailers, Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium 1979. I thought I was just going to see a reggae concert. It was way more than that. I've seen a lot of concerts but I wasn't prepared for a religious experience. I still get chills when I hear (good quality) live show of the Wailers.

Yep, it's the Dead.

I'd have a different answer if it was a studio album choice for the Desert Island (and then i'd have a hell of a struggle between Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" and Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" but since you asked for a SHOW...my desert island choice is:

Evan's Fieldhouse, DeKalb, Illinois, 10-29-77.

The fluidity of the playing, combined with the sheer rock n roll energy and note-perfect renditions of the songs (my favorite all-time EYES, ST. STEPHEN, JACK STRAW, MIGHT AS WELL and BERTHA all appear in this show), make it a performance that continues to stun, amaze, comfort, and inspire every time I hear it.

Hey Rasterman - I have a copy of that Marley show if you need it. I live in Monterey - you still around Santa Cruz?

You could ask this Question once a week and I'd have 52 different Answers. First one I thought of was my 21st Birthday 9.22.91 in Boston. Grateful Dead.

Dead 3-29-90. Such a sweet show with the sax just soaring overhead like a bird caught in a sea breeze. And jerry is right there with B. The dark star, eyes, bird. Wa-pow!!! Just gets me every time. Man that's a good show. I think I'm gonna go to that island now and give it a listen!

This is really, really hard. I'm tempted to go with Pink Floyd here, perhaps Wish You Were Here. As pointed out before, it's a show. So, with that, it would have to be a Grateful Dead show although I do own some choice bootleg Floyd. Anyway, here it is...One Disc...

June 9th, 1977 Winterland, Set Two:
Funiculi Funicula ; Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; Estimated Prophet > Saint Stephen > Not Fade Away > Drums > Saint Stephen > Terrapin Station > Sugar Magnolia

Can't fit the Samson & Delilah opener or the two encores though!

Either GD 8-27-72 or 8-28-82 @ Veneta, OR If you ever saw them there you'd know why.

OK, I'll bite...why?
I mean, it's obviously a beautiful setting. There's so many good choices!

There's nothing to bite on. Both shows were incredibly good and the spiritual setting of the place was like no other. Maybe it's a personal thing for me, I don't know. The 1982 show remains the greatest day of my life.

Understood. I have one or two of those as well. I'll have to look into the 82 show...that's the Oregon County Fair one? Yeah, I have it. West LA Fadeaway is well done. Great show. But that's obvious since it's your Desert Island Disc!

Either Dead 10-12-84 or Zappa 10-31-81. A close third is Widespread Panic 10-14-96. What is it about October?

Glad there's no island close by...too hard to pick.

I think we all have to start thinking that we packed our i-pods full of shows before we got stranded. So.....what's your i-pod filled with?

Heavy Dead of course with 72-74,77,90-91 the biggest hitters. A boatload of Kimock, Phish and Keller Williams round out my most played. A handful of shows by each are in 160kbps but most are 128. For the early 90's GD tours I usually go with mostly 64s cuz I want so many (like the MSG 90 and 91 runs and pretty much all of June 91). 7141 songs right now with around 200 megs to spare on a 40G 3rd gen iPod.

Oh, yes, let's start THAT.
My iPod used to be filled with all of my favorite bands and a bunch of Dead. Then, slowly but surely, my Download Dead ate all of the other bands one by one. Oh, a few are left, but they know it's a matter of time before they get devoured too. I (am lucky to) have a 30G too. There's still not enough room for all my music. For now, the Dead simply ARE my iPod. It's a fantastic device when at work! Anyway, mine's pretty darn full of everything from 66 to about 83. After that, some 89 & 90. It's mostly 69 to 80. Heavy on 72 through 77.

5/8/77 sounds nice...but I'd personally go with 2/26/77. Although I would also be tempted to take some String Cheese instead, but I wouldn't be able to choose just one show.

There are some great Junkies shows here on the archive, btw, as I assume you're aware...

I love Trinity Sessions, too..I'd lost my copy of The Caution Horses until I found it in my truck of all places
:-)I'd been searching for it for a while and there it was..
listened to it Saturday night and realized I'd been lost without it. Lot's of great stuff on there. Of course then there's the 200 more miles live collection..

And yes, I've got a few shows from here. I love 'em

So much music to whittle down to one show. I'll take July 4, 1981 at Manor Downs in Austin, TX., for sentimental reasons as well as this just being a great show.
